Story
This story begins in 2018 when I was looking for non-profits/charities to do volunteer work. I found Chris and his non-profit https://re-mat.org/ on a business message board. He was looking for help raising donations so he could start building mattress recycling centers in Texas. Seeing how he wasn’t getting much help, I emailed him and we set up a meeting at a local coffee shop. We spent 6 hours chatting and his passion for recycling re-ignited my passion for game development. I told him I had a crazy idea, what if i made a video game to help raise donations? Ever since i was little, i wanted to make games, and this would push me to do something. I took his brand logo, the bull, and built a world around it. A robot bull from the future who gets sent back in time to clean up the earth. Its Terminator meets recycling.
2018
Built on GameSalad, you can see development on the old blog below . It was a simple 2d runner, my plan was to finish it and sell it for 1$ on mobile platforms. 100% proceeds donated to re-mat. Nearing the finish line, the game files got wiped from my computer. A bug using Google’s Back-up-and-sync, Windows flagged most of the files as corrupt and the data was lost. To give you some perspective of work I put in, imagine working on a project for 3 months, 6 days a week, 12-18 hours a day. Chris and I decided to work on a Blockchain game instead.
2019
In February, I started rebuilding RE-MAT:2089 using the Unreal Engine. You can watch videos of the different stages of progression on my YouTube Channel In March I released a small prototype.
Playtest Events
THINK SCIENCE & DISCOVERY DAY, Texas Public Radio
I set up the demo so that the events in-game can be reset whenever someone comes up to play. It included gathering materials to purchase a missile launcher weapon, then a boss fight. Toward the end of the event, when the crowed died down, one kid played for a good 20 minutes. He genuinely loved exploring the land and underwater levels. Its very rewarding to see people of all ages enjoying it.
Boys and girls Clubs of SA STEM students, Texas
An hour long demo with kids at the boys and Girls Club of San Antonio. These kids are super smart, and after they played the prototype we talked about our favorite games. Its no surprise that they talked about call of duty and mortalkombat haha, I was also playing those games when I was little!
Earth day San Antonio
There are some more pictures scattered online, but this is the only one i was able to take. This was right before I released a prototype online. Parents and kids really enjoyed it!
